Exploring Savannah’s Best Beaches
Experience the warmth of a Southern summer by the seaside with a trip to one of the idyllic beaches just a short drive from The Alida’s perch on the riverfront. Whether you’re looking for a quick dip or a destination beach day, we’re happy to guide you to the best option for fun in the sun.

Tybee Island
Less than 30 minutes from downtown Savannah, Tybee Island is a local favorite known as “Savannah’s Beach.” Located right on the Georgia barrier reef, Tybee is actually home to a few different beaches worth exploring. The largest is North Beach, home to charming restaurants and shopping options, as well as historical sites like Georgia’s tallest and oldest lighthouse. If you’re looking for adventure, this is also the place to take surf lessons or rent a kayak for a day on the waves.

For something more secluded, stop by Tybee’s Back River Beach, a serene setting favored by locals for the wide sand beaches, calm waters, and unforgettable sunsets. It’s also the spot to dig into a plate of crabs with a cold beer before heading back to the city.

Little Tybee Island
If you’re feeling adventurous and want to immerse yourself in coastal Georgia’s natural wonders, plan a full day exploring Little Tybee Island, a nature preserve accessible only by boat. Charter a boat or rent a kayak to spend the day looking for native species among the marsh and relaxing on the pristine beaches.

St. Simons Island
Just about 90 minutes south of Savannah you’ll find St. Simon’s Island, an idyllic historic site rich with moss-covered trees, classic examples of Southern architecture, and of course, gorgeous beaches. East Beach includes a few different smaller inlets to choose from when setting up your spot for the day, and features packed sand that makes biking and running popular options for exploring.

Jekyll Island
Part of what’s called The Golden Isles (along with St. Simons), Jekyll Island’s most fascinating feature might be Driftwood Beach, an otherworldly destination marked by the eerie standing trees turned to driftwood (the area was once a coastal forest). It’s a dramatic spot for a picnic and a sure way to impress kids.

Hilton Head Island
Just across the border in South Carolina, Hilton Head Island is a famous summer destination for a reason. Less than an hour’s drive from downtown Savannah, Hilton Head offers 12 miles of beaches to choose from, many of which are considered to be some of the country’s best. Lots of public beach access points make it easy to locate the ideal spot to spend a day reading, bodyboarding, and swimming in the warm waters until it’s time to pack up.
